Largest LED screens popped up in Johannesburg (half as big as a football pitch!) displaying user contributed Facebook msgs, Mxit msgs (local South African social network), QQ msgs (Chinese social network) and Tweets in support of their favorite player(s) from the World Cup!

The BBC’s video on demand service, iPlayer, is introducing social networking features which should further increase the popularity of Twitter and Facebook in the UK. The new iPlayer Beta is set to “officially” go live at the end of June.

One only needs to look to video of passengers texting on the wing of Captain Sully Sullenberg’s jet immersed in the Hudson River, or Facebook and Twitter posts from stranded airline passengers throughout Europe at the mercy of Icelandic volcanic ash, to understand that on-site observers are often the first to report on an event. More and more, first observation reports are quickly migrating to mainstream media websites, screens and pages.  Oftentimes, the news is moving viral over various media platforms before facts can be checked, numbers confirmed and responses crafted.
